Satin ribbon/badge worn by members of the 1856 Committee of Vigilance during the great and review on August 19, 1856

San Francisco

White satin ribbon printed in black. 18x6.5 cm (7x2½").

Ribbon worn as a badge on the left lapel of each of the 100 men in Company 7 (Capt. Geo. H. Fossefross) of First Regiment, commanded by Major Geo. F. Watson, during the great parade and review of the Vigilance Committee on August 19, 1856. As H.H. Bancroft writes, in Popular Tribunals, Vol. II, "Over 6,000 men were in this triumphal march to celebrate the end of the need for a Vigilance Committee in San Francisco. Members of the Committee were in citizens dress, some attention, however, being paid to uniformity -- black pantaloons, black frock-coats buttoned to the neck, white gloves and glazed or cloth caps prevailing; on the left lapel of the coat was worn a white satin badge denoting the company; most of the officers were mounted; bouquets adorned the muskets."

Lot Amendments

Some soiling, creasing and discoloration, top edge fraying; very good.
