New Series Vol. I, No. I, May 1, 1852 - Vol. I, No. 11, Dec. 1, 1852 (Old Series Volume IX). 30.8x22.5 cm (12¼x9"), later half cloth & marbled boards. 

The first nine issues of the New Series of The Friend, resumed three months after its suspension in February of 1852. The journal is of great significance in the study of Hawaii during this period, offering historical articles and insights into American influence in Hawaii during the middle of the nineteenth century. Interspersed as these are with seaman's yarns and moralistic homilies dedicated to saving the whalers and sailors from the evil influences of drink and debauchery, the periodical evokes the essence of a Hawaii struggling between the influences of the West and the lures of Polynesia. There are also snippets of "Foreign News" of interest, such as the observation that "The Chinese are pouring into California. Late news from China indicates the spirit of immigration was on the increase, 7,500 had engaged their passages at last accounts."
