Statement to Voters concerning the Proposition to acquire a Municipal Water Supply, as submitted at the special election, Thursday, November 12th, 1908

San Francisco

Published by the Order of the Board of Supervisors

15, [1] pp. With 4 illustrations from photographs; bird's-eye map. 23.2x15.2 cm (9¼x6"), stapled self-wrappers.

Call for voters to approve the damming of Hetch-Hetchy in the Sierra Nevada, a proposal fought long and futilely by John Muir and other conservationists. The need for a water supply owned by San Francisco is laid out, and the advantages of damming the Hetch-Hetchy Valley and exploiting Lake Eleanor are summarized. As history records, the voters passed the proposition, and the pristine valley of Hetch-Hetchy was flooded to ameliorate the thirst of San Franciscans. There are two full-page photos of the Hetch-Hetchy Valley, and one of the dam site; there is a quarter-page view of Lake Eleanor. No copies are listed in OCLC. Faint rubberstamp of San Francisco photographer and publisher Charles B. Turrill to top of front wrapper.
