Thwaite's historically sound treatment of the journals and supplementary material make this one of the most important, and most impressive, publications relating to Lewis and Clark. It was issued in three different formats: a deluxe limited folio edition of 50 copies printed on imperial Japan paper with many illustrations colored by hand, a limited folio edition of 200 copies, printed on Van Gelder hand-made paper, and the present octavo trade edition.
