Accounts of these two important voyages undertaken by the Columbia, commanded by Robert Gray, sent by Boston merchants to participate in the lucrative fur trade. During the first voyage, it is estimated Gray took 200 sea otter skins worth $18,000; he then sailed to China, sold the skins, bought tea, and made his way back to Boston, becoming the first to carry the American flag around the globe. This is Volume 79 of the Massachusetts Historical Society Collections; it is handsomely printed by Daniel Berkeley Updike at the Merrymount Press. Hill 831; Smith 4710; Tweney 32.
