George Fox had been with PBA Galleries for over 20 years and was the Vice President of Market Development and Senior Auctioneer. George started collecting books as a youth, and worked as a “runner” for his first auction in New England at 18 years old. After college and years as a ski racer, he settled in San Francisco, raised a family and spent years as an executive in the book printing and publishing industry. He later returned to the auction world to follow his passion for collecting as head of the Book Department at Butterfield & Butterfield Auctioneers. He then joined PBA Galleries shortly after its founding. George was a passionate collector of 19th Century American printed ephemera, trade cards, the history of color printing in America and fine press books. He was a Master of the Press of the Roxburghe Club of San Francisco, past President and member of the Book Club of California, the American Historical Print Collectors Society, board member of the Ephemera Society of America, and an elected member of the American Antiquarian Society.

Sadly, George passed away in October 2017. It is a great loss felt by many in the book and ephemera world. George was a true gentleman, always with a smile on his face, a kind word, and he truly wanted to help collectors add to their collections. We will miss him greatly and have now named our auction room in his honor.
