Description:
Woodcut map, modern hand-coloring. 30.5x36 cm. (12x14¼") plus German title at top
An influential map from Münster's very popular Cosmography, based on Abraham Ortelius's 1570 map, with the bulge on the west coast of South America. This map replaced the highly speculative, and remarkably inaccurate, Münster map of 1540, which continued to be published in editions of the Cosmography though the 1570's. The impression on the present example is particularly rich, so rich, in fact, that the text and fleuron on the verso is visible through the map, which is on thin paper; the modern coloring is quite attractively executed. This is from the fourth (of five) editions of the map, with "Nuoa Francia" in the right-hand panel of the text in roman, not italic, type, and "Spanien" the last word of the second line. The size of the fleuron on the reverse is 49x169 cm. Burden 67.
