Description:
[16], 163 pp. a-b4, A-T4, V6 (wanting K2-3, M2). Numerous woodcut historiated initials. (folio) 11¾x8¼, modern quarter vellum & boards, new endpapers. First Edition.
The very rare first edition of this key scientific work of the Renaissance, translated into English in 1658 as Natural Magick. The work contains a famous - and possibly the earliest - description of the camera obscura, and also has material on magnetism and demonology, among other subjects. No copies of the 1558 first edition are listed by OCLC/WorldCat, and the last copy to sell at auction, according to the American Book Prices Current, was in 1980, the Honeyman copy. This copy incomplete, lacking three leaves: K2-3 (pp. 75-78) and M2 (pp. 91-92). Adams P1931.
Condition:
Shelfmark R111 at top of title, along with another number crossed out, old ink notation "oratorii nannetensis" at center of title. Earlier leaves dog-eared with some loss at corners including to title-page, some very light dampstaining to latter leaves, occasional traces of mildew, still very good.
