Description:
Illustrated with a copper-engraved title-page. (Folio) 14x8¾, period calf with beveled edges, brass corner bosses and central brass on-lay to front and rear, brass strip near joints, folding brass clasps with adjoining clasp holders.
An immense biblical tome four and a half inches thick from cover to cover, beautifully bound, probably for a church or religious institution. The brass boss pieces were originally fastened to the covers of book for ornamental value or to prevent the leather from being scratched or marred. Books of this nature were intended to lie on a lectern and not for standing on bookshelves. This copy with the Old Testament published in 1719 and the New Testament dated 1720. With printed "Acte van Authorisatie" [Act of Authority] on the back of the title-page signed by some official.
Condition:
Joints starting to split, spine ends chipped, light rubbing, lower metal clasp and upper clasp holder both loose with a few pins missing; last leaf detached, title-page loose, faint dampstaining to small portions to upper margin throughout; else very good to near fine, overall.
