Description:
[iii]-xvi, 624 pp. Illustrated with 69 plates, 39 of them designed & etched on steel by Hablot K. Browne (Phiz), 29 designed & etched on steel by Peter Palette; the other being a portrait of Dickens engraved by Finden from the painting by Maclise. 8¼x5-1/8, bound in period half calf and marbled boards, ruled in gilt, gilt-lettered red morocco spine label, spine decoratively tooled in gilt, marbled endpapers and edges. First Edition in book form, first issue.
This copy with the two first issue points, i.e. p. 123, line 17, "visiter" for "sister"; and p. 160, line 6 up, "latter" for "letter." First state of the first two issued plates, both having the the publisher's imprint; second issue of the frontispiece and third and fourth issued plates, without the publisher's imprint. The bound book form originally was issued with a total of 40 plates (including the frontispiece); however, this copy contains an additional 29 plates. Condition:
Front joint tender with top 1" splitting, spine a bit darkened and rubbed, some rubbing to extremities and joints; front hinge cracking, frontispiece detached, 1" paper mending to upper right corner of title page, occasional faint foxing and light pencil marks, bookplates of Horatio Noble Pym and Horace Sanford Baker, small bookseller's label, else very good or better.
