Description:
[4], 102 pp. 9x5½, period calf, rebacked with modern cloth, new endpapers.
Rare book auction catalogue which possibly belonged to Thomas Frognall Dibdin. In Dibdin's Bibliomania, on pp. 401-402 of the expanded 1842 edition, describing various book auction, he writes "The following year was sold in a similar way the select and very curious collection of Richard Wright, MD; the strength of which lay chiefly in publications relating to drama and romance. It is, in my humble opinion, a most judicious, as well as neatly printed little catalogue; and not more than a dozen copies of it, I think, were printed upon large paper. Secure this volume, Lisardo, if you wish to add to your riches in English Bibliography." Dibdin adds, in a note, "My copy...is upon large paper, beautifully priced by a friend who hath an unrivalled pen in this way..." The present copy is neatly priced throughout, in what could well be described in a beautiful hand, and seems most likely one of the twelve large paper copies. The margins are quite full, and at the top of the title-page is written in pencil, in what appears an early hand, "Only 12 copies printed." The catalogue, which comprises 2824 lots, contains, in addition to the drama and romance esteemed by Dibdin, significant works in "Physic, Anatomy, Chemistry and Natural History in various Languages," "Politics, Free-thinking, Polygamy and Divorce...," "Foreign History and Voyages...and Treatises upon Witchcraft," etc.
Condition:
Rubbing and corner wear to the covers; title-page neatly detached, having split along the gutter margin where attached to the new free endpaper, very light foxing to the contents, else very good.
