Description:
5 volumes. [108], 745; [6], 720, [1], 213, [2]; [2], 679, [1], 130; [2], 919, [1], 141, [1]; [18], 499, 566, [1] pp. Text in Hebrew, Greek, Latin, Chaldaic, and Syriac, where appropriate, in side-by-side columns. With 3 full-page copper engavings in Vol. I (including the pictorial title, an elaborate dedicatory leaf on its verso, and an engraving featuring various biblical episodes); full-page copper-engraving "Domus Israel" in Vol. IV; Vols. II-IV with woodcut added titles in Hebrew. (Folio) 16¼x10½, contemporary (or nearly contemporary) full calf tooled in gilt, Vol. I with the name H. Herman Cluver stamped in gilt on the front cover, all rebacked with gilt-tooled leather spines, corners repaired.
Christopher Plantin's magnificent polyglot Bible, containing the Old and New Testaments in Hebrew, Greek, Latin, Chaldaic and/or Syriac, with commentary on the various interpretations. There were three additional volumes of critical commentary, not present here, as is often the case; the Bible is complete. Each volume with the bookplate of "F.A.F.", and an indecipherable ownership signature ("Schol. Gustrov"?) dated 1828. Possibly lacking an engraved title or two, and maybe a map, though the need for their presence has not been determined. Sold as is.
Condition:
Rubbing to the leather, lacking clasps; Vol. I with dampstain to lower corners of the first dozen or so leaves, half-title with repair along gutter and lower corner replaced (affecting no text), repair to lower corner of title-leaf (affecting some of the engraving, but not much), last several leaves with light dampstain to lower corner; first half of Vol. II dampstained, and there are a number of repairs, mostly marginal, but into the text of some pages, with some dampstaining and worming at rear; Vol. III with first 25 or so pages with dampstaining to gutters affecting some text and causing some damage; Vol. IV with new rear pastedown; Vol. V with repair to title-page, some minor marginal staining, a few worm-holes; some other wear as may be expected, overall very good.
