Three of the individual poem title pages signed by C[harles] Churchill, towards the rear. Charles Churchill (1731-1764), was, next to Pope, the greatest Satirist of the 18th century. Obtaining a curacy, his life of reckless dissipation, scandalous conduct and violent quarrels with half the notables of his period, including David Garrick and Dr. Johnson, brought him to an early end. Churchill's fame as a poet was chiefly through the publication of "The Rosciad," a satire upon the performers at Drury Lane and Covent Garden theatres, which he published at his own risk in 1761. Includes: The Rosciad, The Apology, Night, The Prophecy of Famine, An Epistle to William Hogarth, The Ghost in four books, The Conference, The Author, The Duellist, Gotham in three books (third book signed on title page), The Candidate, The Times (signed on title page), Independence (signed on title page), Churchill Dissected, and Churchill Defended.
Condition:
Chipping and abrasions to portions of spine with a few cracks, corners bumped, joints splitting, slight indents to covers; occasional light foxing, else very good.
