| Vol. I (only). xv, [1], 470 + [20] ad pp. Illustrated with plates from photos and reproductions, including a photogravure frontispiece of the thoroughbred "Persimmon" with tissue-guard; drawings within the text. 9x6½, full red morocco, rebacked with original gilt-tooled and lettered morocco spine laid on, raised bands, covers with gilt margins, inner gilt dentelles, patterned endpapers; bound by Gale & Polden Ltd, London with their label on the front pastedown. First Edition. |
| A second volume was published one year later in 1899. Contains 41 articles written by the members of the Stock Exchange within the branch of Sport. Includes a chapter devoted to golf written by S. Mure Fergusson. Other sports include: archery, boxing, fencing, cycling, cricket, racket sports, rugby, football, hunting, lacrosse, mountaineering, polo, rowing, skating, tennis, yachting, etc. From the editor’s preface: "That the House should write on sport is perfectly natural, for ever since its inception, the old English sport of Bull and Bear baiting has been carried on right up to the present time." |
