xvi, 17-631, + [1] ad pp. Illustrated with 328 wood engravings throughout the text by W. Brown, True Williams, B. Day and others; double frontispiece including a steel-engraved portrait of Twain and a wood engraving of the baby Moses being set adrift (this is the second state, captioned "Titian's Moses"). 8½x5½, original brown cloth, ruled in blind, gilt-stamped on cover and spine with pictures of the tramp. First Edition, later issue.
Twain's 1878 record of his trip through Europe. Twain mentioned that "One day it occurred to me that it had been many years since the world had been afforded the spectacle of a man adventurous enough to undertake a journey through Europe on foot. After much thought, I decided that I was a person fitted to furnish to mankind this spectacle." BAL 3386.
Condition:
Spine a bit sunned, wear to ends and corners, minor rubbing; front hinge cracking, some foxing, gift inscription dated 1881 and previous owner's signature; still very good.
