Blue cloth, front cover stamped in blind, spine stamped in silver, pictorial jacket. First Edition, first cloth-bound issue.
First state, without printer's name on copyright page and with large period between "talk" and "this" on p. 112, line 11. Second issue jacket with flap corners evenly clipped and a smooth texture paper quality. A masterful novel set in Norway during World War II, in which a small and peaceful town is occupied by Nazi troops. Goldstone-Payne A16.b.
Condition:
Jacket spine a bit darkened, short tears and tiny chips to edges, mild soiling, price clipped; fading to cloth spine and edges, leaning; hinges tender, previous owner's signature dated 1942; else very good in like and bright jacket.
