Description:
xxxv, [1], 264 pp. Edited by Edward Fitzgibbon. Wood-engraved frontispiece & 4 illustrations in the text, all on mounted India proof paper; wood-engraved tailpiece (not mounted). (8vo) 8¼x5, period quarter dark green morocco and red boards, original gilt-stamped morocco spine laid on, top edge gilt. First Edition, large paper issue.
Westwood & Satchell note that "a few copies were on large paper, with cuts on India paper," and this is one of them. "Shipley is thorough and comprehensive in describing his view on fly tying, fly patterns and the old controversy of 'match the hatch' versus impressionistic patterns. One chapter deals with trolling. He is generally considered the first author to mention the practive of false casting in order to remove excess moisture from the fly" (Norton II 198). Heckscher 1771; Westwood & Satchell p.194. Engraved bookplate of Dwight Blaney.
Condition:
Mild edge wear and rubbing; hinges repaired with later paper, other light wear; generally very good.
