Description:
[14], 304 pp. 8½x5½, pictorial wrappers. First Trade Softbound Edition, suppressed issue.
Signed by author on title page. Leavitt's third novel and quite controversial, which made assumptions of a double life of the late great British poet, Sir Stephen Spender, Poet Laureate, who was married yet was also known as a lifelong homosexual, within literary circles. This book represents the true suppressed issue; during publication, a lawsuit was filed in England, and later was settled out of court. Copies of this London edition were to be destroyed, however some copies apparently leaked out. It was re-issued with editing changes, making this edition much more preferred and quite rare.
