Description:
Two works bound in one. 32, 56; 120 pp. With 7 folding maps. 11x8½, period half morocco and marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt, raised bands.
George Bancroft, American historian and statesman, represented the U.S. Government in this important Anglo-American boundary dispute over the Vancouver and San Juan islands. The present work, quite rare, is of great importance for the diplomatic history of the Oregon and northwestern boundary question, the Hudson's Bay Company, and the San Juan Island difficulty. The German Kaiser decided in favor of the United States. The maps, charts and diagrams depict Washington and the Northwest, and include lithographic copies of 18th century maps. Printed "in a few copies for the Kaiser, the British plenipotentiary and the immediate parties concerned." Howes B89 (second part only). With the bookplate of Joseph M. Gleason.
Condition:
Minor extremity wear; some maps browned, splitting at folds, other tears, a few detached with portions still bound in, a piece or two loose, very good overall.
