Description:
6 pp., in ink, on one 4-page lettersheet & 1 single sheet of lined paper. 9¾x7.
Long letter from a former governor of California to the current one. John Bigler, who was governor in the early 1850's, is attending the Democratic National Convention in New York, and had intended to place Henry Haight's name in nomination for president, only to find that the majority of his delegates actually preferred judge Stephen Field. Bigler goes into great detail on the process. Accompanied by a printed column of a letter to the editor of the New York World, from Bigler, covering the same ground. Accompanied by a second letter from Bigler to Haight, written two and a half months later, primarily offering condolences on a recent loss, and discussing some political matters. Provenance: A private California collection.
