Description:
Color lithograph pictorial time-line, lithographed by Strobridge & Co., Cincinnati. 262" (21 ft., 11")x27" (including margins); backed with linen; folded and bound in original 27¼"x13½" cloth boards with modern calf rebacking and re-cornering, front cover stamped and lettered in gilt. Second Edition and seventh-thousand, carefully and critically revised.
First published in 1871. Fascinating and incredibly large pictorial time line of the history of the world, from Adam and Eve (or the Stone-age, whichever came first) to Noah's Ark resting on Ararat, the Tower of Babel, the crucifixion of Christ, the Roman Empire, the discovery of America and a listing of the U.S. Presidents to 1876 and finally terminating at 1900. The chart begins with a view of the world from the Eastern Hemisphere (since the discovery of the Western Hemisphere didn't come until much later) and includes the author's photographic portrait in the middle. Also depicts ancient tools, Egyptian Hieroglyphic letters, the Greek Alphabet, eminent historians, important biblical figures and their genealogy, different time line chronologies for various countries and empires showing their own particular histories and much more. Descriptive text pamphlet, titled "A Key, or Complete and full Explanation of Adams' Synchronological Chart" also included, attached to the inside of the front cover with a brass brad. A wonderful example of 19th century American color lithography.
Condition:
Some wear to cloth; linen backing splitting along several folds; front wrapper of text pamphlet detached; overall very good and better than typically encountered.
