Important observations of America by a French nobleman, first published in much abbreviated form in 1781, with the complete and authorized edition published in Paris in 1786. Howes notes that "in its completed form constitutes the first trustworthy record of life in the United States." Chastellux met with Thomas Jefferson and other luminaries, as well as many common citizens. The two maps are of the eastern seaboard from Philadelphia to below the Chesapeake, and westward to the Allegheny Mountains; and the northeast from Delaware Bay to Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The two plates detail a natural bridge in Virginia with which the author was particularly fascinated.
