“Hope did much to advance the knowledge of heart murmurs, valvular disease, and aneurysm; he described the second sound of the left side of the sternum in mitral stenosis as ‘altered’--losing its  short, flat clear sound and becoming a prolonged bellows murmur.  From his description this became known as ‘Hope’s early diastolic murmur.’”--Garrison-Morton 2727. His classic descriptions of cardiac asthma, valvular disease and cardiac neurosis also appear in this important text.  Wellcome notes that the book was probably published in 1831, but “all known copies seem to have cancel title page dated 1832”, as does ours. Wellcome III, p. 298. With the neat early signature of Robert Morton on the title, and with the early bookplate of the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania on the front pastedown.
