Scarce account of events in the early stages of the Second Seminole War, with some historical background and natural history of the, an important piece of Floridiana. Includes a vobaculary of the Seminole language. Major Smith, a member of the South Carolina volunteer regiment commanded by Colonel A. H. Brisbane, served in the second war with the Seminoles (1835--42), after the Native Americans, led by Chief Osceola, refused to honor the treaty of Paynes Landing and migrate west of the Mississippi River.
