Important study of the American Indians by artist and anthropologist, George Catlin who visited 48 Indian tribes on his tour of the West and executed some 600 paintings. This is a later edition of Letters and Notes on...North American Indians, first published in 1841, and although that date is retained on the title-page, this edition was published about a half century later. The first edition to have the plates printed in color was published in 1876; the present edition, which was printed by W. & A.K. Johnston in Edinburgh, has plates which are distinctly brighter and more vibrant than that edition. The hundreds of illustrations portray all aspects of Indian life, including life in their villages, games, dances, funerals, sudatories, religious ceremonies, buffalo hunting, etc., plus detailed descriptions and depictions of native dress and physiognomy.
