The third in McGuffey's series of five readers begun the preceding year. In 1838 the author and publisher were sued for copyright infringement by Samuel Worcester, and a court injunction required that publication and distribution of this book be stopped. The book was immediately revised, and in 1838 a new edition now titled “Revised and Improved Eclectic Third Reader; …” was published, eliminating the portions that were claimed to be infringing on copyrighted material and replacing the lessons with different text. WorldCat lists seven copies of the present edition with an eighth copy located at the Library of Congress (there exists some discrepancy in pagination among the various copies). Rare.
