Insightful record of the author's extensive travels in the territories of the Creek, Cherokee and Choctaw Indians as far west as the Mississippi River. The author had great interest in the Indians and with white fur traders, and the narrative abounds in descriptions of forest life and the customs and manners of various tribes. Streeter, citing the 1791 Philadelphia edition, calls the work a "classic of southern natural history and exploration, with much on the southern Indian tribes. Bartram's account of the remote frontier, of the plantations, trading posts, and Indian villages at the end of the eighteenth century is unrivaled." Howe says is is "a work of high character well meriting its wide esteem," and Field opines that Bartram "neglected nothing which would add to the common stock of human knowledge." The frontispiece is a portrait of Mico Chlucco the Long Warrior, King of the Siminoles, and the other plates include plants and two of a great soft-shelled tortoise; the map shows the coast of Florida from above St. Augustine to Cape Canaveral.
