Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Irene Bidwell, from Frederick David Bidwell." Biography of General Bidwell and a history of the 49th New York Infantry. Bidwell, who was active in organizing Buffalo's first police force before the Civil War, helped raise the 49th. He was promoted to brigadier general on August 11, 1864, and was mortally wounded at the Battle of Cedar Creek, Virginia, on October 19, 1864.
