The Reverend Howard Malcom toured Asia under the auspices of the American Missionary Society "to examine into, and with the missionaries adjust, many points not easily settled by correspondence; to compare the various modes of operation in different missions [in Malaysia, Burma, Thailand and China]..." - preface. His three years of travel resulted in interesting descriptions of social, economic, and political conditions as well as natural resources, opium trade, agriculture, religion, slavery, etc. This second edition with same imprint, date and collation as the first edition, which came out in two separate volumes, except that there are no advertisement pages.
