Genthe photograph of London is inscribed by Jack: "Dear Blasphemer, From the 'Navigator', Jan. 3, 1912." "Blasphemer" was the nickname of F.G. Hancock, of New York City. The London's stayed with him for several weeks while Jack conducted a variety of business in the city prior to their departure on March 1 aboard the "Dirigo" a four-masted barque bound around Cape Horn to Seattle. Jack began writing his novel "The Valley of the Moon" on Jan. 3, 1912, the day he inscribed this photograph, and finished the book just before the Dirigo's arrival in Seattle on July 26.
