Significant archive of material from the Rev. Bernard Hubbard, S.J. (1888-1962), head of the University of Santa Clara Geology Department, who from 1926 until nearly the time of his death made annual trips to Alaska, often accompanied by students and explorers of kindred spirit, investigating the glaciers, volcanoes, natives, natural wonders, and economic and social climate. When not in Alaska, he was an indefatigable lecturer, touring the nation, presenting talks, slide shows, and movies about the frozen north and its people. He was dubbed “The Glacier Priest,” and brought Alaska into the consciousness of countless denizens of the lower 48. Among the many items: * Approximately 45 letters from Hubbard to Edgar R. Levin, who accompanied Hubbard on several trips to Alaska during the 1930’s, serving as field manager for the expeditions. Most of the letters are handwritten, several are typed. They date from the mid-1930’s to 1956, though the great majority are 1945 or earlier; several are undated. The letters are rich in detail about Alaska voyages, the lecture circuit, expedition planning, financial matters, and personal enquiries and revelations. * Approximately 65 photographs – 35 are 8x10 (most of these enlargements or earlier negatives), many of Father Hubbard in Alaska. * Manuscript “flash-cards” with Hubbard’s notes on Alaska, apparently employed during his lectures. Approx. 97 cards, most written on both sides, present historical background, geography, and other details of Alaska. Most are 6x4, others 3x5.
* Manuscript on Eskimo language, most typed, some holograph, including grammar, vocabulary, phrases, etc., with a few supplemental sheets. Approximately 55 leaves in all.
