Description:

With 56 hand-colored copper-engraved plates, with accompanying letterpress, engraved by S. Watts after E.C. Smith. 9¼x5¾, period quarter calf & marbled boards, spine tooled in gilt, morocco lettering pieces. First Edition.

The first publication to show Australian plants after live specimens, which had been brought back from Australia and the South Seas to England, with fine plates drawn by Edwin Dalton Smith, a botanical artist attached to the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew. This is the first issue, with plates watermarked 1826 and 1827. The plates and accompanying letterpress are in this copy bound in alphabetical order, not plate number order. Condition:

Light rubbing and shelf wear to boards; occasional light offset to or from plates, bookplate of Frances Anne Kenrick, else very good or better.
