3 volumes plus Supplement bound in 2 volumes. Descriptive text plus 440 hand-colored copperplate engravings on 436 sheets. (4to) 12¼x8, later half green calf, marbled boards, morocco title labels, all edges marbled. First Edition.

James Sowerby was the paterfamilias of a gifted family of British botanical and natural science illustrators whose members amassed an impressive record of achievements spanning three generations. Nissen 1874.

Condition:

Spines a bit faded; plates 1-240 have the plate numbers repeated in pencil in the upper margin, occasional light to moderate foxing to plates but overall near fine.
