Captivating photographs of the Middle East in this transitional period, as the British and French replaced Ottoman rule, the Jewish population was seeking an independent state, the Arabs were jostling with each other, and the forces of modernism clashed with traditional cultures. Adelbert Bartlett was a commercial photographer based in Santa Monica, California, and the director of the Near East Relief Fund in Los Angeles. Most of his papers, photographs and negatives reside in the Special Collections department at U.C.L.A.
