30 of the photographs are approximately 9x6 to 15x10 or reverse, 3 are laid down on mounts, the others matted loose, all with Smith's estate rubberstamp on the reverse, and exhibit label of Lowinsky Gallery, New York, on the back of the mat; one is 5x3½, with Magnum Photo rubberstamps on verso.

Striking selection of vintage photographs by W. Eugene Smith, one of the masters of 20th century photography. Smith was invited by Hitachi to Japan for a year, to photograph their workers, factories, and Japan in general, in an attempt to capture the complexity and beauty of modern Japan. Most of the photographs in this collection were published in the photographic essay "Japan: A Chapter of Image," 1963.
