Alan Bean, in space suit, kneels in front of a mock-up of the lunar landing module. Signed "Alan Bean, Apollo XII." A member of the third group of astronauts selected by NASA in 1963, Bean was the pilot of the lunar module of the second lunar landing, November 1969, in the Ocean of Storms. He later was spacecraft commander of Skylab Mission II, July 29 to September 25, 1973. He retired in 1981 to devote his full time to painting.
