"Compliments of Dr. Simon Baruch" stamped in lower margin of front wrapper. Baruch served as the Assistant Surgeon of the 3rd South Carolina Battalion and later the 13th Mississippi Infantry Regiment. The 3rd South Carolina fought with General Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia in Drayton’s and Kershaw’s Brigades, seeing combat at Second Manassas, on the Maryland Campaign, at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, in the Wilderness, and at Spottsylvania Courthouse.
