Bunnell was a member of the Mariposa Battalion which pursued Indians into the Valley in March 1851, marking the first real discovery of Yosemite by men of European descent. The first edition was published in 1880; the third edition, of which this is a reprint with added illustrations and a new map, was published in 1892.
