Atlas volume. 51 pp. + plates. With 31 double-page copper-engraved plates, 29 of which are maps and plans (11 with period hand-coloring showing the different routes including a large folding map), 1 plate shows Plato on the Promontory of Sunium discoursing to his disciples, and 1 plate of various coins; plus an extra colored map of Ancient Greece inserted (circa 1900). 10½x8½, bound in modern half calf and marbled boards, blind-stamped vignettes on gilt-lettered spine, new endpapers. Anarcharsis was an early 6th Century Sythian Prince / Explorer (B.C.) included as one of the Ancient Seven Sages, who travelled from his homeland on the northern shores of the Black Sea to Athens. After extensive travels in the ancient World described in his work, he returned home where he was killed by the Syths because he wanted to introduce the cult of the “Great Mother of the Gods.” This is the atlas volume from the author’s seven volume (plus atlas) work, which includes outstanding maps of the ancient world by D’Anville and DuBoca.
