Rare Civil War era edition of Thackeray, the first, and only, Confederate edition. Philip was first issued serially in London, 1861-1862, and then published in 1862 in London, New York, and Leipzig. Parrish & Willingham 6573 (locating 18 complete copies); Harwell Confederate Hundred 90; Snowden, War-Time Publications from the Press of Walker, Evans & Cogswell (Charleston, 1922), pp. 24-26: "[The publisher's] most notable, one may say audacious, effort, this war-time edition of Thackeray with the Columbia imprint is in great demand among collectors." The lithographed plates for this edition, illustrating scenes from the book and also printed by Evans and Cogswell, are quite captivating. In this copy, pp. 97-98 and 103-104 repeated.
