Pelham's map on New Mexico was first issued in 1856, which Wheat remarks as showing "that a start [on the survey] had been made but that precious little had been accomplished to date. Apparently all that had actually been done (and that is problematical) was to survey a line north from an initial point in the valley of the Rio Grande, near Albuquerque (which is not named), to Taos. The remainder of the map, which includes present Arizona..." The map has been slightly updated, and is an interesting if rather barren depiction of the Southwest so recently won from Mexico, with Santa Fe nestled among mountain ranges, settlements and forts along the Rio Grande shown, various rivers shown, etc. See Wheat Transmississippi 854.
