Significant in that it covers the relationship between the United States, Mexico, and the newly independent Texas, on pp. 23-24, commenting on the victory at San Jacinto, speculating on events if Santa Anna had prevailed, and remarking that "there can be no question of the propriety of recognising the independence of Texas, whenever that is a clearly established fact... The annexation of Texas to the United States is a totally different thing, involving a train of evils, as the propagation among us of a spirit of military conquest, the chances of foreign jealousy and collision, and peril to the durability of the Union itself..." Texas did, however, serve as a worthy buffer against Mexico. Quite scarce: the RLG Union Catalogue lists only four copies, at Princeton, Harvard, and Michigan universities, and the American Antiquarian Society. Sabin 18095.
