Interesting archive relating to early San Francisco justice, and the former Texas Ranger John Coffee Hays, who was elected Sheriff of San Francisco in 1850, was appointed U.S. Surveyor General in 1853, helped found the city of Oakland, California, and was successful in real estate and ranching.
