Signed by Robert B. Parker on the front free endpaper. Author's doctoral dissertation study on Hammett, Chandler, and Macdonald, originally written and submitted in 1971 at Boston University for Parker's Ph.D. in literature. It is known that Parker's own Boston private eye character, Spenser, combines Philip Marlowe's morals (Chandler's character) with Lew Archer's social conscience (Macdonald's character). A rare and interesting item originally issued before Parker's first book, The Godwulf Manuscript. This being the 1983 facsimile edition.
