Scarce first edition by the most accomplished Victorian author of the macabre, with a very good early provenance. Vols II-III are signed "L.V. Collins" on the first page of text, perhaps a relative of the author. Vol I is signed "J. Bradford" on the front free endpaper and has a W.H. Smith Subscription Library label pasted to inside front cover. All volumes have the morocco bookplate of Florence and Edward Kaye, the noted Detective Fiction collectors.
