Biography of Edmund Pendleton Gaines (1777-1849), one of the most controversial figures in American military history. He was accused of starting the First Seminole War, interfered with Winfield Scott's campaign in the Second Seminole War, almost single-handedly brought on a war with Mexico in 1836, created an Indian scare in 1838, and serious upset the plans of the War Department during the Mexican War.
