394 pp. Illustrated with a steel-engraved frontispiece portrait of the author with tissue-guard; and 4 maps (2 double-page) on thin stock paper (as issued). 10¾x8¼, original gilt-lettered blue cloth rebacked with later maroon cloth, spine lettered in gilt, new endpapers. Facsimile Edition.

First published in 1811, this is the reprint of the first English edition. Pike's expedition was the first U.S. Government-sponsored exploration of the Southwest, and is second in the annals of American exploration only to Lewis and Clark. Howes calls for three plates in this edition plus the four maps, but this copy has only the frontispiece and the maps. Howes P373.

Condition:

Light rubbing and shelf wear; tape repair to frontispiece, occasional pencil notes, else very good.
