History of Mount Mica in the hills of Paris, Maine, where America's first gem mine was discovered in 1820 by Elijah Hamlin and Ezekiel Holmes. The valuable tourmaline crystals were found and continued to be excavated and in 1972 the Plumbago Mining in Newry, Maine opened up the "richest pocket of tourmaline ever found in North America".
