Descriptive work on gemstones which for many years enjoyed a top position among French gemological works, according to Sinkankas, who goes on to state "Despite its age, it still proves to be rewarding reading and one that is recommended as a permanent reference... the vigorous, handsome wood engravings are excellent and depict mining scences, show crystals, the famous cave of smoky quartz crystals found in the Swiss Alps near Tiefengletscher in 1867, jewelry, engraved gems, etc." Sinkankas 5334. With the bookplates of Romero Martinez and John Sinkankas.
