Carvalho was an artist member of Frémont's expedition of 1853 that explored the Rockies for a possible railroad route; when the party split up at Parowan, Utah Territory, on Feb. 8, 1854, Carvalho took a southern route, reaching Los Angeles by way of Cajon Pass and San Bernardino on June 9. This edition with the same collation as the 1856, New York and London edition, except for the addition of the frontispiece, and Howes notes that the 1856 edition was actually formed from sheets of the present edition, with a new title-page.
